The brief
Nicosia International Airport is located west of the city of Nicosia, the island's capital, near Lakatamia and Yerolakkos. The site is a former RAF station established in the 1930s and was it was undertaking Allied operations during World War II. The new terminal of the Nicosia International Airport was opened in 1968 in the young, post-colonial Republic of Cyprus. It was designed by the German architects Dorsch und Gehrmann and it was one of the most modern airports in the region. Unfortunately its service life was very short since it was bombarded and subsequently closed in the summer of 1974, amidst the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974. The airport was taken under the control of the United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) which were present in the island from 1963 . Since then, it is the home of the UNFICYP. Recently, it has come back to spotlight as the negotiations for the resolution of the Cyprus Problem between the two communities are taking place in the area.
The scope of the project is to propose a concept engineering solution and a business model for the redevelopment of the Nicosia International Airport as a modern International Hub within the EU for both passengers and cargo, upon a settlement of the Cyprus Problem. Furthermore, within this framework, each proposal should incorporate the old terminal in whole or in part as a remembrance memorial of the short history of Cyprus after its independence that lead to its closure and beyond that how the site became part of the solution making process since then.
Students are expected to work in large groups and tackle a difficult, real-life multidisciplinary problem by researching and designing a concept solution considering technical, social and business issues. Such an exercise will allow students to hone their skills and manage their own learning while working on a fascinating project.
The Brief of the project can be found here in both Greek and English. Student projects will be in Greek but summaries in English will be available in this website..
